Garden RouteThe oldest city in South Africa, it has cobblestone streets, colourful street markets and an array of excellent shops and restaurants making it a delight to explore. Visit the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in the harbour, take a boat to Robben Island or see some of the many historical building in the city centre. But don't miss out seeing the views from Table Mountain which can be reached by cable car. There are also a variety of scenic drives, from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth lies the Garden Route an area of extraordinary scenic beauty where tranquil winelands give way to craggy mountains, small bays and golden beaches, towering cliffs and primeval forests. Or through the picturesque harbour town of Hout Bay you can travel along Chapman's Peak towards the Cape of Good Hope, the most south-western point in Africa.

SafariOnce a small gold mining town and now Southern Africa's largest city and a major financial and industrial centre, Johannesburg offers excellent shopping and entertainment.  From here you can join a safari in the Kruger National Park.  With approximately 145 mammal species it is possible to see all the classical big game including elephant, black and Sun Citywhite rhino, hippopotamus, giraffe, zebra and buffalo.  Large carnivores include lion, leopard and cheetah.  If you want more action then Sun City is the place for you, a fabulous resort complex that captivates visitors with its combination of golf, gambling, game and land and water activities in the Lost City and Valley of the Eaves.

When to go

The climate in South Africa varies depending on the region. However over much of the country summer (mid October to mid February) is characterised by hot sunny weather often with afternoon thunderstorms that clear quickly. Autumn sees little rain and warm temperatures, winter can be cold. Spring in many ways is the best time to visit depending on where and why you are visiting.
