For an island in the middle of nowhere, Mauritius is a remarkably cosmopolitan place.  It was settled on some 400 hundred years ago and is a marvelous mix of African, Indian, European and Oriental influences.  It is a great getaway for travellers, along with sun, sand and water comes a fascinating blend of cultures.  Mauritius is an island paradise and an extremely well kept secret which offers a variety of beautiful long sandy beaches and blue lagoons, some great deep sea fishing, diving, snorkelling, volcanoes, bird sanctuaries, the Black River Gorge National Park, temples, mosques and markets.

Popular destinations in the north of the island include: Port Louis, the capital and main harbour of Mauritius.  The town with Botanical Gdnsits streets always full of people is popular with visitors, see the famous market, the port, Adelaide Fort and the avenue of royal coconut trees in front of Government House.  The Botanical Gardens of Pamplemousse has over 500 different species of plants including giant water lilies.  The Domaine Les Pailles with its sugar mill, still and spice garden and inland isWaterfall Trou aux Cerfs the spectacular crater of an extinct volcano.  On the south of the island is Black River Gorge National Park with its breathtaking views, Rochester Falls, a magnificent cascade of water accessed through sugar cane fields, La Vanille Crocodile Park, where Nile crocodiles are bred and Saint-Aubin & Bois Cheri, where you can visit the tea factory for a tasting session and admire the outstanding scenery.

Swaying palms, coral-white sands, a dazzling blue ocean, an enchanting underwater world, sugar cane fields, towering mountains and the leisurely Mauritian way of life combine to make this a truly tropical island.

When to go

The temperature in Mauritius does not vary much over the year with average highs ranging from 24°C - 30°C and lows from 17°C - 23°C. The highest rainfall is expected between December and April peaking in March.
